Just in time for Earth Day, TCU was named a Tree Campus Higher Education Institution by the Arbor Day Foundation for the eighth consecutive year, recognizing the university鈥檚 commitment to caring for campus trees.
鈥淲e are incredibly proud of this beautiful campus, our grounds team and the incredible trees we have to show for our hard work and the university鈥檚 commitment to this,鈥� said Erik Trevino, director of landscaping and grounds.鈥�淥ur leadership puts a priority on our beautification and our sustainability, and our landscaping and grounds team carries that out. I鈥檓 so proud of this accomplishment for all of them.鈥�
The five standards required for the designation are:
- Establishment of a campus tree advisory committee鈥�
- Evidence of a campus tree care plan鈥�
- Verification of the plan鈥檚 dedicated annual expenditures鈥�
- Observing Arbor Day鈥�
- Creating a service-learning project aimed at engaging the student body鈥�
鈥� According to the Arbor Day Foundation, a commitment to trees and green space have added benefits to the campus community, such as reducing energy use, absorbing carbon dioxide, encouraging physical activity and promoting environmental wellness.
